Do you have a sweet tooth that craves chocolate or other sugars? Go ahead and eat the sweet you’ve been wanting, but don’t forget to brush your teeth afterwards! If you don’t, you are more susceptible to getting cavities. But wait, don’t cavities only occur in children? Sorry, but that is not true – to dispel the popular myth, children and adults alike are prone to getting cavities if they don’t take proper care of their teeth.
Cavities occur, when foods containing sugars and starches are left on a person’s teeth. The bacteria in a person’s mouth digest these carbohydrates and turn them into acid which in turn form plaque that sticks to teeth. The acids in plaque soften the enamel on teeth which create holes that are known as cavities.
It is very important to see the dentist at least twice a year, or more if you are considered an at risk patient. The hygienist that cleans your teeth is able to spot cavities, many times even before they become visible. The best way to beat a cavity is to brush your teeth twice a day and floss! Take the proper steps in caring for your teeth and you’ll be rewarded with a healthy mouth.
